Rosario Pivonello MD, PhD

Rosario Pivonello is Associate Professor of Endocrinology at “Federico II” University of Naples, Italy. Prof. Pivonello received his medical degree from University of Naples Federico II and completed his research training and a fellowship at the Endocrinology Institute of the University of Naples. In 2003, he received a PhD in Neuropsychopharmacology and Toxicology at “Federico II” University, and a second PhD in 2005 in Internal Medicine (Basic and Clinical Endocrinology) at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, focusing his research on the role of the dopaminergic system in pituitary and adrenal tumors. His major clinical interest and scientific research include pituitary and adrenal diseases, with a focus on Cushing's syndrome, for which he is a recognized expert by the scientific community. He is principal investigator of international multicenter studies on Cushing’s syndrome, acromegaly, and adrenal diseases, as well as national research projects in endocrinology that are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) and Italian Ministry of Health (MoH).

In the last decade, Prof. Pivonello’s clinical and research interests include the study of andrology and reproductive and sexual medicine. In 2011, he pursued a master’s degree in Andrology and Sexual Medicine at the University of Florence, Italy, and in 2016 a Master’s degree in Andrology and Seminology at La Sapienza University of Rome. He is Director of the FERTISEXCARES Centre of Andrology and Medicine of Male and Female Reproduction and Sexuality (Excellence Centre of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine [SIAMS]) at University Hospital Federico II, and Head of the Homonym Unit. He is the UNESCO Chair of Health Education and Sustainable Development at Federico II University (Coordinator Prof. Annamaria Colao) and directs the Andrology Program.

Prof. Pivonello is a member of several national and international society committees and holds editorships for several international journals. Currently, he is a Board Member of The Pituitary Society (2021 to date), coordinator of the Club “Endocrinology and Metabolism of Sport and Physical Exercise” of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (2018 to date), and coordinator of the “Relationships with Other Scientific Societies and Institutions” Committee of the Italian Society of Gender, Identity and Health (SIGIS).

In the past, Prof. Pivonello has been a member of Executive Committee of the European Neuroendocrine Association (ENEA) (2016-2020). He has been coordinator (2018- 2021) and member (2010-2012) of the Scientific Committee, coordinator of the “Drugs” Committee (2017-2019), and member of Executive Committee (2012-2016) of SIAMS. In the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE), he has been a member of the Drugs Committee, and consults with AIFA for drug monitoring in endocrinology (2015-2017), is a member of the Innovative Proposals Commission (2013-2015) and he has been a member of the Scientific Committee (2011-2013 and 2017-2019). Currently, Prof. Pivonello is member of International Relationships Committee for the SIE. He has been Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Molecular Sciences section on “Molecular Endocrinology and Metabolism” (2019-2020) and he is Associate Editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology section of “Pituitary Endocrinology” (2017 to date), Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Journal of Neuroendocrinology (2020 to date) and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (2022 to date).

Prof. Pivonello has been an expert peer reviewer for Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the German Research Foundation for the evaluation of funding proposals 2017-2021, and he is member of the Register of Expert Peer Reviewers for Italian Scientific Evaluation (MIUR-REPRISE) (2015 to date). Among his academic achievements, he is coordinator of a second-level University Master course in Andrology and Medicine of Reproduction and Sexuality at Federico II University, a member of the Committee of Lecturers for PhD candidates at La Sapienza University. He is author of more than 390 scientific publications (h-index: 69, Citations: 15637 [Scopus]); he is ranked in the Italian Top Scientist List.
