Prof Márta Korbonits is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Deputy Director of the William Harvey Research Institute at Barts and the London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London, and Honorary Consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust. Dr. Korbonits graduated from Semmelweis Medical School in Budapest and undertook her early clinical training in the Internal Medicine Department of the Postgraduate Medical School followed by training in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital under Prof Michael Besser and Prof Ashley Grossman. She performed research at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London where she earned her PhD.
Currently, Prof Korbonits is working on the genetics of endocrine tumors as well as metabolic consequences of hormonal imbalances, including hypercortisolism. She has authored more than 250 original peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals and numerous reviews and has an h-index of 83. A world-renowned expert in endocrinology, Dr. Korbonits has delivered over 300 invited lectures and presentations around the world. She is an elected member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and is President of the Society for Endocrinology.
Dr. Korbonits has received many honors and awards during her career, most recently The Clinical Endocrinology Trust Lecturer, Society for Endocrinology, Glasgow (2021), the Gideon de Laune Lecturer, The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, London (2021), the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Keynote Lecturer (2020), the Rolf Gaillard Prize from the European Society of Neuroendocrinology (2022). In 2015, she received the Delbert A. Fisher Scholar Award and in 2023 she was the recipient of the Gerald D. Aurbach Award for Outstanding Translational Research of the Endocrine Society.
